Serial Experiments Lain Opening Lyrics

Mentioned several times throughout the course of the show, religion and the case of God is brought into question by Serial Experiments Lain. The first big question that presents itself is if Lain is a goddess by the end or not.

  • I'm a fan of the show Serial Experiments Lain (the anime cartoon) and I must say this is a nice opening song for it. Boa sings a beautiful song with a sort of sweet mellow tune to it, and yet it has a sort of freakish flow.
  • And you don't seem to understand A shame you seemed an honest man And all the fears you hold so dear Will turn to whisper in your ear And you know what they say might hurt you.

”What?”(Lain Iwakura)

This quotation describes the reaction of an anime-watcher who enters the layers of the show “Serial Experimental Lain” (abbreviated to SEL). But before I miss my actual target and hit another one I propose a SEL rewatch.

For the fans there is a reason to enter the “Wired” again because SEL celebrates its 20th birthday since its first airing. Rejoice!

But how about users who had planned to, might have heard but never had the motivation to start or just stumbled upon this thread? I will introduce you, potential first watchers, the surface of “Serial Experiments Lain”.

”What is SEL about?”

Lain Iwakura is an ordinary but reserved girl who visits middle school. Her daily life crumbles down as she and her other classmates get a disturbing e-mail from a student who recently has committed suicide. Although Lain isn’t interested in digital matters she enters the rabbit hole of the “Wired”, a multinational computer network, to look for the cause of the e-mail and encounters the confusing world of the “Wired” and bizarre events…

This summary sounds like a description of a mystery series – it is not wrong because the whole show depicts a maze in which one can get lost pretty easily through the uncommon presentation: the character designs are simple (given the fact that SEL was aired in the year 1998 the designs are old), plotlines are convoluted and intentionally interrupted so that the viewers have to solve the mysteries by themselves.

”Sounds hard. What would be a good reason to watch an old show?”

Lain

Uhh, I don’t know. There are plenty of personal reasons to watch an avant-garde show – friend’s/the community’s recommendation, being a classic, for the memes, killing time… I’m not in the position to press a reason on you but I think: surrounded by a multiple choice of countless shows which have more or less using a linear plot SEL is an abrupt change of it – some might feel freed by predictable lines, others might despise the confusion of SEL. I personally had some difficulties because of the strangeness of SEL but warmed up with each Layer and it became one of my favorite shows.

A rewatch is a good location especially for experimental shows like this – you will discover things and other perspectives you might have overlooked during a watch.

“Who were behind the idea of SEL?”

Yoshitoshi ABe (Character Designe), Chiaki J. Konaka (Writer) and Yasayuki Ueda (Producer) were behind Lain and later also created two other classics: Haibane Renmei and Texhnolyze, another favorite show of mine.

To give you a safer confirmation here is a wonderful WT! by u/kaverik. As a last encore here is an excerpt of “Serial Experimental Lain” which might convince you more.

”When would the Rewatch start?”

I set the date on the 6th of July because it was the date in which SEL was aired for the first time. If there is enough interest I will make a precise schedule.
