Where Is The Serial Number On A Stihl Chainsaw

On many Stihl saws you’ll find what they refer to as a “cooling plate” mounted between the muffler and cylinder. On some models I believe were given the plate at some point after initial release.

My question is for anyone who may have an original 10mm 044 and/or has historical knowledge on the 044/440 line. I have what I believe to be an all-original 10mm 044. It does not have the cooling plate. I also have an early stihl MS440 chainsaw that does not have the cooling plate, but it was partially disassembled when I received it, so I can’t be sure if it was misplaced or not.

So, can anyone verify for me if early 044s had the plate and/or early 440s? I know it doesn’t seem like a big deal, but I like my saws to be just as they should. I would stick a plate on the 044 simply because it certainly would not hurt anything from a performance standpoint, but the muffler lines up perfectly when mounted and it seems if I put the plate in there it’ll space the lower holes out a little bit from the case causing unnecessary stress. I believe the mufflers are the same throughout the range, as well as cylinder fitment, so I would have to assume if there is a difference regarding the plate it would have to be with the case dimensions?

IF you cannot find it, the best thing to do is to take it to a good Stihl chainsaw dealer and he should be able to help you. IF you need the serial number for parts and you cannot find it, the Dealer should be able to look at the saw and the parts that you need and figure out what to order. If you live near a Stihl dealer and want to be sure of what your selling your best bet to know for sure is to probable take it in and have them ID it. Unfortunately there is no serial code decoder I know of for stihl.

How can the answer be improved?

Stihl Recalls Certain Model Chain Saws

Where Do You Find The Serial Number On A Stihl Chainsaw

Washington, D.C.- - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Stihl Inc. of Virginia Beach, Va., announced today that it is recalling approximately 50,000 series 1127 chain saws, models 029 and 039 that were manufactured from March 7, 1993 to August 12, 1994. An ignition ground wire on the saw can wear out prematurely and possibly start a fire if it comes into contact with gasoline from the saw or with any other combustible substance. Stihl Inc. has received at least one report of a fire associated with a worn-out ignition ground wire.
The recalled saws were sold nationally through Stihl servicing dealers for about $400 to $450 each. The recalled model 029 saws have serial numbers 226585676 and above, and the recalled model 039 saws have serial numbers 227236569 and above. The model number is located on the top of the chain saw's engine and the serial numbers are stamped onto the chain saw's housing, adjacent to the exhaust/muffler opening.
Owners of the recalled Stihl model 029 or 039 chain saws should discontinue using the saws immediately and return them to an authorized Stihl dealer for a free repair of the ground wire. Stihl dealers will also put a sticker near the gas cap explaining the correct tightening procedures.
For more information, consumers can contact their authorized Stihl dealer or call Stihl. Inc. at (800) GO-STIHL (800 467-8445).
