Firearm dating information about Remington series firearms and guns provided by the Remington Society. You can reference the above website in order to date your firearm by the numbers and letters in the serial number and also learn how to read the serial number to know what each number and letter stands for, just like in a drivers license number. Remington resumed stamping the date code on the barrel on 10/1/01. Only Remington can give an owner a DOM for a gun from this era, that carries no date code - via the gun's serial number. Since letters have obviously been repeated, it's vital to know when your Remington model was introduced/discontinued. The serial number on all guns made was preceded by the letter U. According to the Remington Society of America barrel date codes were used starting in 1921. This means that only later guns would have a date, specifically in the last 8 years of production. Modern Remington barrels are stamped with a Date/Code, which denotes when it was made. Remington Year of Manufacture Codes maybe found on the barrel of your Remington shotgun, on the left side, just forward of the receiver. The first letter of the Code is the month of manufacture, followed by one or two letters which are the year of manufacture. The last letter in the serial number on modern Remington shotguns is the receiver code. It tells you what shells the receiver was set up at the factory to handle. It's the location of the ejector that makes this determination in 870s, and a 12 gauge 870 set up to handle 3' shells at the factory has a serial number that ends in M. The 'Q' serial number prefix stamp is an inventory code Remington added to Model 1900 serial numbers in 1904; and Rem continued that practice thru the end of production (Model 1894 Remington doubles were assigned a 'P' inventory code). Remington is voluntarily recalling Remington Model 887™ shotguns manufactured from December 1, 2013 through November 24, 2014. Model 887™ shotguns manufactured before December 1, 2013, and after November 24, 2014 are not subject to this recall.

Remington Year of Manufacture Codes maybe found on the barrel of your Remington rifle [or shotgun] on the left side, just forward of the receiver; the first letter of the Code is the month of manufacture, followed by one or two letters which are the year of manufacture. For shotguns with removeable barrels, the code will be valid for the manufacture of the barrel; maybe for the receiver, as barrels do get switched around.
According to the 'Blue Book of Gun Values'& 'The Remington Society', the coding continues as follows:

All of the above is true, and as noted with shotguns the serial number is a real key in determining if the barrel even could be original. A lot of people don't realize just how prevalent barrel swapping is, but just as an example I have 5 Remington shotguns and 10 barrels, and I only have the one choke tubed barrel for the 28. I know which barrel was original with what, but depending on how they are assembled when I die, I wouldn't place a lot of bets on how some of them get sold
And, Remington's friendly 'call them and they will tell you when it was made' service is highly unreliable in my opinion. I know of three flat out wrong answers they have given out, and they say one of my guns doesn't even exist - a 5 digit Model 1100. They wanted me to send it to them. I offered a picture, but they wanted to see the gun. No thanks. I didn't have the heart to tell them I once owned a 4 digit one.

I do not trust Remington's dating service accuracy. If they were Match.com, you could end up with Nancy Pelosi.

BTT, since there's 'When was my Remington made ?' questions STILL being posted, and apparently nobody's going through the threads and/or doing a search.

Thanks for bringing this back up.
I stuck this in my favorites a while back.
It gets used alot looking for barrels on the auction sites.
I agree that a sticky on this page and the Gun ID Archive would save many having to post the question.
A few here don't mind helping out, everyone has been patient and helpful.

Please refer to the latest upgrade, above, for date code application during 1999-2001 (**).

Remington Owners,
Remington Year of Manufacture Codes maybe found on the barrel of your Remington rifle [or shotgun] on the left side, just forward of the receiver; the first letter of the Code is the month of manufacture, followed by one or two letters which are the year of manufacture. For shotguns with removeable barrels, the code will be valid for the manufacture of the barrel; maybe for the receiver, as barrels do get switched around.

As maybe seen, the year code letters duplicate; some knowledge of when the model was introduced should resolve the actual year of manufacture.
